Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speechwriter. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency which includes videos and comments on depictions of women's roles in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency is an educational site for non-profit organizations that investigates representations of women in narratives from popular culture. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes of women as they appear in popular culture. Additionally, she works to raise awareness of online harassment directed at women, and other marginalized groups of people. Sarkeesian is a graduate in the field of political and social thought at York University. As a public speaker, she's extremely sought-after and has spoken at TEDxWomen XOXO and United Nations Broadband Working Group. She has been interested in feminist issues, gender and gender equality since a young stage of her life. In 2009, when she was continuing to study at the university level she launched her Feminist Frequency website. She had a plan to launch a web series examining the gender roles in video games. She found herself the target of an online harassment campaign. The incident did not deter her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her determination as feminist media critic. Her numerous contributions to the feminist field are recognized with numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian is an award nominated media critic as well as the creator of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit that explores the representations of women in pop media narratives.
