Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on the 18th of July 1994, was raised in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was born to a mother of both black and white parents. She was raised on her mother's side. She said that her skin color was a reason for her feeling at odds with her peers as growing up. They struggled financially and were constantly shifting, having to leave their lives sixteen different times to pursue her father's career. Russell admitted that, despite the challenges there was always an chance to reinvent yourself, to create something new. Russell's parents had financial difficulties and she was constantly in motion. Russell was eighteen when she began her first acting class. She used her savings from work to buy a car and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. When her money ran out, she would return home to work until she earned enough to be able to audition again. The process went on for four years until she landed her first major TV role.
